PICK OF THE WEEK: American Music Club - Friday, May 9th - The Larimer Lounge, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Formed in 1982 by the brilliant songwriter Mark Eitzel American Music Club went on to record seven albums before a self imposed ten year hiatus that began in 1994. When they returned four years ago with the critically acclaimed Love Songs For Patriots they were received by fans new and old alike with open arms and their new record The Golden Age is every bit as good if not better. While their music is often slow, mellow and slightly sad, the passion that Eitzel throws into his performances is amazing and something not to be missed.

With Denver standouts Hello Kavita & Bela Karoli also on the bill it promises to be yet another great night of music at The Larimer.

PICK OF THE WEEK: The Swell Season - Saturday, May 3rd - The Ellie Caulkins Opera House, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Unless you've been living in a box for the last year and half, you have at least heard of the movie Once. It is the enchanting and touching story of one man, his music, and the woman who helped him to get it out to the world. The man, Glen Hansard of The Frames, and the woman, Czech singer and pianist Marketa Irglova, are now touring together as The Swell Season. Unless you plan on heading out to Telluride for the Bluegrass Festival this is your only chance to catch these two performing songs from Once live, right in Denver, in the beautiful Ellie Caulkins Opera House.

Though Once received an enormous amount of attention in the months following it's release it remained a largely "indie" movie until the Academy of Motion Pictures nominated the song "Falling Slowly" for the Oscar for Best Original Song. Hansard and Irglova won the Oscar and their popularity has since soared.

Craigslist may be your best bet for tickets to this one, but it never hurts to check ticketmaster as they frequently release tickets as the event approaches.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Colin Meloy - Saturday, April 26th - The Fox Theatre, Boulder, CO

Why You Should Go: As lead singer and songwriter for The Decemberists Colin Meloy has, for the last 6 years, been creating some of the most beautiful indie rock there is. Though known as a pirate shanty kind of songwriter, Meloy is much more. His lyrics and melodies are intricate and thought provoking while being amazingly pleasing to the ear.

As he does from time to time, Meloy has chosen to leave his bretheren in the Decemberists behind for this outing and is taking the stage solo to support his recent release Colin Meloy Sings Live which features performances from his 2006 solo tour. The tracks on the record are primarily familiar to Decemberists fans though some newly penned songs that have yet to be featured on a Decemberists record rear their head here as well.

Recently Rolling Stone said Meloy is "a master of improbable juxtaposition: arcane, detailed fictions of star-crossed passion and avenging bloodshed dressed up in indie-rock jangle, la-de-da choruses and vintage prog-rock bombast." Though much of the prog-rock will be stripped out on this tour, it promises to be entertaining as Meloy seldom lets his fans down.

When you head out to the show be sure to pull some extra change from those couch cushions to pick up a copy of Meloy's latest in his series of tour only EPs Colin Meloy Sings Sam Cooke. As the name would suggest the EP is a collection of five Sam Cooke songs, intimately arranged and performed by Meloy, with opener Laura Gibson singing harmonies throughout.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Hello Kavita - Saturday, April 5th - The Larimer Lounge, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: You want to be able to say that you attended their first CD release party right here in Denver when your buddy from New York calls you up and tells you about this great new band, Hello Kavita, that he found, don't you???

Seriously, these guys hail from right here in Denver and their debut album, And Then We Turned Sideways, has all the makings of a great record. Strong songwriting, beautiful instrumentation, and solid soulful vocals. Frontman and bandleader Corey Teruya seems to have snuck a peak at Jeff Tweedy's blueprint for Wilco while also owing a healthy debt to the beautifully ragged alt-country that Neil Young was cranking out in the 70's.

From beginning to end this album is well worth the 45 minutes you will invest in it. Whether you find yourself grooving to the America-like shuffle of "Midnight Sound" or shedding a tear in your beer as Teruya touches your soul with the ballad "Disappear," you'll be happy you did.

Catch these guys in the wonderfully dingy confines of the Larimer Lounge before they get scooped up by Ryan Adams or Wilco as an opener on the shed circuit.

PICK OF THE WEEK: These United States - Saturday, March 29th - The Hi-Dive, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: With over 300 performances on two continents under his belt in the last two years, Jesse Elliot and his band, These United States, have had plenty of time to work out the kinks that come with performing their eclectic blend of psyche folk and alt country in a live setting. On this tour they have decided to complicate issues by adding the element of having a different local band join them on stage every night. In Denver, the members of A Girl Named Kyle will add a dynamic to the performance that is sure to keep songs alive and evolving as they put their distinctive touch on each of Elliot's songs.

Despite being active for several years already These United States released their debut album, A Picture of The Three of Us At The Gate To The Garden of Eden, earlier this month. The record is a layered affair that has just the right amount of pop hook to sell the listener immediately on songs like “First Sight,” “Kings and Aces,” and “Business.” After several listens it becomes clear that there are also several songs that slowly creep their way into your consciousness. Simply put, it’s a wonderful ride and the excellent production value only enhances the most subtle elements of the songs’ structures.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Black Moth Super Rainbow - Tuesday, March 25th - The Oriental Theatre, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Where else are you going to get your fix of spacey analog psychedelic jams on a Tuesday night. These 5 guys have been blowing audiences minds for 5 years and with their recent stint on the road with The Flaming Lips they are catching on with a wider audience. Their performance combines audio and visual elements to create a full spectrum sensory experience that is not to be missed.

Little is known about the band themselves but their Dandelion Gum album says this about the band: "Deep in the woods of western Pennsylvania vocoders hum amongst the flowers and synths bubble under the leaf-strewn ground while flutes whistle in the wind and beats bounce to the soft drizzle of a warm acid rain. As the sun peeks out from between the clouds, the organic aural concoction of Black Moth Super Rainbow starts to glisten above the trees."

Take that for what it's worth and go make up your own mind.

This year's edition of his "& Friends" shows will include fiddler extraordinare Darol Anger, Austin's neighbor and former String Cheese Incident guitarist Billy Nershi, and Nashville based bassist and cellist, Bryn Davies. PICK OF THE WEEK: Del McCoury Band & David Grisman Quintet - Friday, March 7th - The Ogden Theater, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: The leaders of these two bands are legends in the bluegrass world and their bands have become legendary as well. Some of the best pickers, players and singers currently active are members of these groups and in both cases their performances are nothing short of awe inspiring.

McCoury and his band worked with Phish back in the 90's when Trey and the boys decided they wanted to learn to play bluegrass and they even appeared with Phish on stage on a couple of occasions. At the other end of the spectrum the Del McCoury Band worked with Steve Earl on his 1999 release The Mountain. They have crossed genres and generations to become one today's most respected and loved Bluegrass bands.

David Grisman has a rich musical legacy that is interwoven with that of the Grateful Dead. Jerry Garcia and Grisman were good friends for much of their lives and recorded several albums of bluegrass, folk and jazz based material together. Grateful Dawg, a fascinating documentary about their friendship and musical relationship, offers an interesting look into the lives of these two legends.

Grisman's self dubbed "Dawg Music" is at times mellow and jazzy while at other times lightning quick footstomping Bluegrass. It will offer a great compliment to Del McCoury Band's more traditional high-lonesome sound. What a treat it is to have these two bands share the stage of The Ogden right here in Denver.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Fort Knox Five vs Thunderball - Friday, February 22nd - The Shelter, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Fort Knox Five is laying down some of the funkiest beats on the scene right now. Their updated 70's electro funk sound is straight out of our nation's capital and they are is sure to get you moving. They have been featured on all sorts of lounge and dance compilations and recently remixed the Bob Marley tunes "Duppy Conqueror" and "Soul Shakedown Party" for the first authorized Bob Marley remix album, Roots, Rock, Remixed.

In contrast, Fort Knox Five's Electro Lounge alter ego, Thunderball, have been expertly crafting cinematic, dub-laden compositions full of intrigue, effortlessly changing tempos between D&B, breakbeat and downtempo for the last 12 years. Thunderball draw from their love of ‘60s cinema, Brazilian beats and Afro funk rhythms, to create explosive soundscapes designed for modern spy chases and late night encounters.

PICK OF THE WEEK: The North Mississippi Allstars - Thurs, Fri & Saturday, Feb 14th, 15th & 16th - Denver and Boulder, CO

Why You Should Go: The North Mississippi Allstars are the premier contemporary blues bands touring today. Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson founded the band in 1996 after years of soaking up the music of their father, Jim Dickinson. In their youth they had absorbed the North Mississippi Blues legacy while playing and shaking it down at the juke joints with their blues ancestors. Luther (guitar and vocals) and Cody (drums and vocals) joined up with bassist Chris Chew to form the core of their own band, The North Mississippi Allstars. Through the filter of generations of Mississippi Blues men, the Allstars pioneered their own blues-infused rock and roll and continue to do so.

Twelve years into a very promising career, The Allstars have garned attention from the fans around the world and the likes of the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences who have nominated them for several Grammy Awards.

The Allstars guitarist Luther Dickinson has recently joined The Black Crowes as a full time member but has pledged to keep The Allstar train moving. They are touring in support of their most recent release Keep The Devil Down.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Jonathan Keller & Friends - Friday, February 8th - Folsom Street Coffee House, Boulder, CO

Why You Should Go: Supporting local music is a key part to the success of the music industry. Jon Keller has lived in Boulder for years and is proud to it home. Keller is a free spirit who's songs stand on their own as artistic products that he should be proud of. His music follows in the tradition of folk artists like David Wilcox and John Gorka and while the songs are primarily based in the singer-songwriter tradition, he is putting together a band for this gig (and the one at the same venue on the 23rd) that includes Ian Hendrick on guitar, Dave Pucul on bass and Todd Lilienthal on banjo. Together they are sure to shape the rough mixes and sketches that are currently posted to Keller's Myspace page into fully fleshed out songs.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Keller Williams and the WMD'S - Saturday, February 2nd - The Fillmore Auditorium, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: For more than 15 years the “One-Man Jamband” known as Keller Williams has been touring the country amazing fans with his own brand of improvisational rock music. Williams has branched out recently and is now touring with a full rock band made up of some of the best players in the jam scene.

Though he used to heavily favor the Acoustic Guitar, in this project Williams has been picking up the electric much more often and filling the traditional role of a rhythm guitarist with his non traditional style. While he still utilizes his trademark looping techniques they are not the focal point of the show as they used to be due to the presence of the three other musicians on stage. Also on the electric guitar is the New York based, but Virginia bred, Gibb Droll. Backing up these two guitar heroes as the rhythm section are Jeff Sipe on Drums and local favorite Keith Moseley on bass.

While the setlist is sure to draw heavily on Williams own catalogue he has been known to surprise audiences with an outrageous cover or three. It should also be mentioned that the potential for suprises increased dramatically when it was announced that Billy Nershi would be handling the opening duties as part of one of his current projects, The Emmitt Nershi Band. Some of magic that Keller created with Mosely & Nershi's previous band, the Boulder based String Cheese Incident, may be rekindled as the WMD'S sets have been stretching up to 3 or more hours. With their well-known penchant for sit-ins there is sure to be plenty of time for the old friends to delight fans and get reacquainted musically Saturday night.

PICK OF THE WEEK: The New Mastersounds - Thurs, Fri, Sat, January 17th, 18th, 19th - Various Front Range Venues

Why You Should Go: Inspired by the 70’s funk and groove of Jimmy McGriff, Groove Holmes, and The Meters, the music of The New Mastersounds is a tight mix of Jazz and Funk that comes to life in the hands of these talented players.

While there is ample evidence of the band member’s fondness for Jazz in their sound, the groove that is laid down by the rhythm section of Pete Shand and Simon Allen is what holds the whole thing together and keeps the wheels on when guitar phenom Eddie Roberts stretches out in Jazz laced solos.

Though they are based in Leeds, England the band claims that the US is the most promising market for their music. The extended, danceable deep funk and soul jams that this band kicks out are sure to get the whole room moving and the party going full strength.

The last time The New Mastersounds came through Denver, they opened up for Mofro at The Ogden and by many accounts they stole the show. Look for them to extend their set well into the early morning hours this time and reward all those fans willing to groove with them.

Note: There has been some confusion as to whether the bands Denver gig will be at Cervantes or Quixotes but either way, head up to 25th and Welton if your Friday night is begging for an infusion of Funk!

PICK OF THE WEEK: Eric Bachmann - Saturday January, 12th - The Hi-Dive, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Eric Bachmann is one of the most powerful singer songwriters currently playing on the indie folk scene today. With simple arrangements and heartfelt lyrics, Bachmann presents his work confidently on the stage in a way that continues to win over new fans.

He began his musical life in the post punk Archers of Loaf before forming his most critically successful project, Crooked Fingers. Though Crooked Fingers is currently on an indefinite hiatus to allow Bachmann to focus on his solo material, his sets are still chock full of the bands material.

Despite being a resident of the area, Bachmann hasn't performed a concert in Denver since September of 2006. He has toured the country with Josh Ritter and Neko Case and even played a run in Europe supporting Two Gallants. The Hi-Dive is an intimate space that should play host to Bachmann's personality and musical style very well. Come welcome him home and encourage him to play more local gigs.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Dinosaur Jr. - Friday December, 14th - The Ogden Theater, Denver, CO

Why You Should go: Because there is only one Dinosaur Jr. The psuedo line-up from the 90's just didn't compete with the sheer sonic assault of the original line-up of J. Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph. They've been back together for a couple of years now and with a new album under their belt they are firing on all cylinders and raging through songs new and old with the same late 80's fervor that caused them to rise to the top of the college rock / burgeoning grunge scene.

This is not a show for the light hearted, with his massive Marshall stacks, Mascis always seems to be bent on deafening his audience. If you go prepared with fresh set of earplugs you should be well prepared for a concert of epic proportions. Don't expect too much of the radio friendly 90's Dinosaur Jr. output, these guys are focusing on what they did so well 20 years ago and it's like they never left.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Iron & Wine - Saturday, December 8th - The Paramount Theater Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Sam Beam (aka Iron & Wine) and his group of travelling minstrels are reinventing folk music for the 21st Century. In the tradition of Dylan and Guthrie, he is a master songwriter and guitarist and as he matures as an artist his ability to compose intricate pieces of music becomes more and more clear.

His most recent release, The Shepherd's Dog, retains all of Beam's hallmarks while stretching the boundries of his sound. The tempo is ratched up on some songs while on others he utilizes his full band to add just the right details to the quietest moments of the most mellow songs. It is simply a fantastic record and is sure to make many writers best of lists this year.

Beam will bring his full band to The Paramount on Saturday and tickets are going fast. I wouldn't wait to get to the door to buy yours as they very well may be gone.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Jackie Greene - Sunday, December 2nd - The Bluebird Theater, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: It isn’t often that a 21 year-old stops a room cold with a soulfully mature voice that calls to mind a young Tom Waits or Otis Redding. But, that is exactly what happened when Jackie Greene took the stage at an open mic in Sacramento in the fall of 2001. At that point Greene had been gigging in bars and selling records out of his trunk for the better part of five years. Things took a turn for him when DIG Music owner Marty DeAnda heard him that night that night in Sacremento, signed him within days and gave the youngster the chance to get his music out to a much broader audience.

Since DeAnda took a chance on him, Greene has put out three acclaimed albums and electrified audiences all over the country. His blues soaked style of rock and his electric stage presence often steals the show as the opening act for established performers such as B.B. King, Taj Mahal and Susan Tedeschi.

Don't miss your opportunity to catch this fantastic performer in the intimate confines of The Bluebird Theater on Sunday night.

Stay tuned for a full length feature on Greene to be posted later in the week.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Polytoxic (Performing The Last Waltz) - Wednesday, November 21st - Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: With Thanksgiving right around the corner it is time to Celebrate one of the most storied concerts in Rock-N-Roll history with a recreation of The Band's Last Waltz. The event, immortalized by Martin Scorsese in the movie of the same name, originally took place at Winterland in San Francisco 31 years ago but comes to life on the stage of Cervantes right here in Denver each year featuring a 30 plus person cast of Denver Musicians and anchored by the band Polytoxic.

Polytoxic has thrown this party several times and The Westword called the concert the best local band concert of the year in 2005. If you have ever seen and enjoyed the movie documenting the event this evening will not be a let down. Polytoxic performs most, if not all, of the original setlist and may even throw a couple of extra songs in. They have the chops to pull it off and with three previous performances under their belt this is bound to be the best yet.

Last year the 30 guest musicians included Aaron Rose, who played the role of Neil Diamond, Jessica Goodkin, singing Van Morrison’s ‘Caravan,’ Christy Chambers playing Joni Mitchell and Cheyenne Kowal from the Reals reprising Emmylou’s role in the movie. The Toxic Horns also joined the band for evening rounding out the sound.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Zappa Plays Zappa - Friday, November 16th 2007 - The Fillmore, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go:

NOTE: Having not seen the production that Dweezle Zappa is putting on I have decided to let the following review of the show in Milwaukee, written by Cal Roach do the talking. This review was posted on a site that I regularly write for Jambase.com.

The general rule with tribute bands is that you go to see a moderately priced facsimile of something you love and leave yearning for the real thing. Band members often dress and coif themselves in the manner of their heroes, creating an aura of dissimulation that renders them subject to derision in the face of serious music. Frank Zappa's formidable reputation as a live performer suggests that trying to recreate his show would be a recipe for disappointment, but his son Dweezil has avoided these pitfalls with the Zappa Plays Zappa experience by not attempting to emulate Frank, just expertly play his music. There is an undeniable continuity between the guitar styles of father and son, but Dweezil has distinguished himself as a master in his own right. Not only can Dweezil play the hell out of his dad's compositions, but like his father, Dweezil has assembled a top-notch cast of musicians who do the Zappa legacy justice. The show is a tribute but it's not a caricature or a novelty. And, it's the closest thing to a Frank Zappa show that many people will ever experience.

The Rave was packed with Zappateers of all ages for the fourth show of the current tour, which lacks ex-FZ band members Terry Bozzio, Steve Vai, and Napoleon Brock Murphy, who played with the group in 2006. The set opened with tight-but-standard versions of "Echidna's Arf (Of You)," "My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama" and "Dirty Love." What happened next was a unique and somewhat surreal concert experience. The big screen behind the band lit up with the image of Frank shredding through "Black Napkins," his recorded solo lancing through the air as the live band backed him. For anyone not prepared, it was an emotional shock. The band pulled it off brilliantly, staying perfectly in step, grooving with Frank's ghost as he wailed the way no one else ever could. It's hard to think of a better way to avoid having to live up to an impossible standard than this novel move.

The performances that included Frank produced some obvious highlights of the evening. He returned for "Montana," singing and careening through a monstrous guitar solo, and the Yo! FZ Raps stylings of "Dumb All Over," endearing himself to the religious right by proclaiming that "God is dumb," then punctuating the sentiment with some nimble fret work. The coolest moment had to be during "Cosmik Debris" when Frank lights a cigarette and jams silently as Dweezil plays a fantastic melodic solo of his own. Then, Frank throttles his guitar and blows minds. These were communal experiences for fan and band, admiration radiating from all corners of the dingy room, bringing the tribute concept to its most reverent end.

Dweezil has amassed an impressive cast of relative unknowns to play the complicated Zappa canon. The frenetic proto-metal prog of the "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" suite was thrilling in its precision and power. "Pygmy Twylyte" was a tight full-band workout that showed remarkable synergy. "Dupree's Paradise" featured solos from all members and some eerie vocal/percussion madness, where Billy Hulting's xylophone work was particularly engrossing and Jamie Kime's guitar solo was blistering. Scheila Gonzalez (sax/flute/percussion) was brilliant throughout. The only weak spot came from Joe Travers on drums. While very talented, his style often leans toward arena rock, almost too straightforward for much of Zappa's material, though it rarely detracted from the performance.

The biggest energy boost came from guest vocalist/guitarist Ray White, who toured with Frank in the '70s and '80s. White played most of the set, bowling the crowd over upon his entrance on "City Of Tiny Lights." His stage presence was monstrously joyful, and his voice was overwhelming. His performance of "Advance Romance" was a loving conjuration of Captain Beefheart's original madness, and his outrageous interpretation of "The Illinois Enema Bandit" induced rapturous applause. There was a clear bond of respect between White and Dweezil, who was in total command of the show and played some rapturous guitar solos as well.

"Cheepnis" was amazing, showing some Frank influence but with a more melodic sensibility, almost Jimmy Page-esque. "Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy" was another Dweezil highlight, indicating perhaps a bit of Vai rubbing off as he played around the rhythm section and reached some tremendous peaks. In the end, Frank naturally won out with his Baby Snakes solo during the essential "Muffin Man" but Dweezil still held his own.

It's useless to rate ZPZ against FZ. You know going in that it can't stack up, and toward the end tunes like "Joe's Garage" and "San Ber'dino" really pronounced the absence of their creator. But, overall, this is a nostalgia trip that brings a lot of happiness to those who miss Frank. His presence is there in his songs, and anything that brings them to life is a blessing.

PICK OF THE WEEK: The Hold Steady / Art Brut - Sunday & Monday, November 11th & 12th - The Fox, Boulder & The Ogden, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Because Rock-N-Roll is back! These two bands are resurrecting Bar Room Rock. With E-Street style guitar hooks and piano runs, The Hold Steady have caputured the hearts of so many as front man Craig Finn speak sings his way through tales of drug pushers, prostitutes and skinheads. For the most part Finn's songs about lost youth struggling to find their way and his characters are so well developed that you immediately feel attached to them.

With lyrics like, "If they ask about Charlemagne be polite and say something vague," or, "Holly was a sexy mess. She looked strung out but experienced," Finn ushers listeners into the world of "Penetration Park," "The Party Pit," "Ybor City," and "Hostile, Mass." It isn't a world that many would venture into on their own, but hand-in-hand with The Hold Steady it's a hell of a ride.

Hailing from England, Art Brut mirrors The Hold Steady in their raw sound, outrageous energy and front man Eddie Argos's vocal delivery. While neither singer has a classically beautiful voice, they have both harnessed what they've got and are using it to the best of their ability to communicate with whoever will listen. The last time they strutted their stuff on a Colorado stage Argos and Art Brut thrilled the crowd at September's Monolith Festival at Red Rocks and definately won over some new fans.

This is a powerful double bill and though The Hold Steady will be closing out the festivities both nights, Art Brut will be playing a long set as well. So buckle up, prepare to call in sick the next day and head out to a true Rock-N-Roll show!

PICK OF THE WEEK: Neil Young - Monday & Tuesday, November 5th & 6th - The Wells Fargo Theater, Denver, CO

NOTE: These shows actually happen Monday and Tuesday of next week but I want to make sure that I give people the opportunity to get tickets if they haven't already done so.

Why You Should Go: Honestly, if you have to ask, don't spend the money. The fact is that Neil Young is one of the most talented and creative songwriters of his generation. He has been writing and recording for more than 40 years and Young is still going strong. Prairie Wind in 2005 was one of the strongest albums of his long and storied career and he has followed it up with another critically acclaimed album in the shape of Chrome Dreams II, the follow up to the long lost late seventies album that never hit shelves.

Youg is a legend and seeing him live is a treat. After nearly dying of a brain Anuerysm 2 years ago, we are lucky to have him with us and touring. His live shows are always memorable and with a new album on the shelves Young is sure to break out all the stops and thrill all who are lucky enough to see him perform.

Young's wife, Pegi will be opening the show supporting her recent self titled album. Young has been known to join his wife during her opening sets, so arrive early if you don't want to miss any of this legend on the stage.

PICK OF THE WEEK: DeVtochKa and Yard Dogs Road Show - Saturday, October 27th - The Fillmore Auditorium, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: When first exposed to their startlingly original sound, it is difficult to believe that DeVotchKa hails from right here in Denver and was formed a mere 10 years ago. Their Eastern European sound and the emotional crooning of lead singer Nick Urata could be the soundtrack to an Eastern Block nightmare, circa 1950. Perhaps they are musicians born in the wrong era or, more likely, they are trying to bring a neglected and largely untapped genre into the public eye.

With roots in burlesque theater, DeVotchKa often pairs their unique sound with surreal visual elements in their stage performances. During the bands Halloween show the Slavic Sisters will be performing aerial stunts high above the audience and as if that isn’t enough, the band is pulling out all the stops and has invited The Yard Dogs Road Show to join them as well. The Yard Dogs are an amazing act who have developed their show into a dark carnival side show that transports the audience to a different reality much like a great circus should.

Finally to top it all off DeVotchKa has ensured that the night will be as close as possible to a real gala event. When people walk into the show they are going to be treated like they are going to a formal dance. Don't miss it!

PICK OF THE WEEK: Jose Gonzalez - Friday, October 12 - The Bluebird Theater, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: The intimate Bluebird Theater is sure to be silent when Gonzalez takes the stage Friday night. His subtle fingerpicking requires the listener to pay close attention as it is a delicate sound that emenates from the speakers and not the blaring roar of a rock band.

Gonzalez's dark and brooding lyrics compliment his arrangements beautifully as he touches on the powerful subjects of love, loss and power. This Sweedish born musician is deftly stretching the genre of Folk Music while weaving in elements of pop.

Having covered The Knife and Massive Attack on his first two albums, Gonzalez may be better known for his covers than for his original music. However, his songs, while at times troubling, have a way of worming their into your mind and making you think about life in a way that you may not have considered.

At The Bluebird Gonzalez is playing solo with only his nylon string acoustic guitar to accompany him. His blend of foot shuffling and knocks on the body on the guitar add a percussive element to his sparsely beautiful sound.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Midlake - Tuesday, October 2nd - The Bluebird Theater, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Every once in a while, a band comes along that undoubtedly evokes something special. You don’t know what it is, but you are certain that they belong set apart from amongst the crowd of musical peers in which they lay.  You quickly find yourself coming to the foregone conclusion that this band’s music is to be revered and will remain relevant for some time to come. Midlake has not only embodied this idealism in the hearts of many already, but with the introduction of their latest album, ‘The Trials of Van Occupanther’, they are making it a reality.

Midlake formed in the small, quirky Texas town of Denton.  There the five diligent musicians toiled to create a sound that was pleasing, as wellas their own. Soon enough they were discovered by Bella Union Records owner and Cocteau Twins bassist, Simon Raymonde. Simon fell deeply in love with the band, and together they began to cultivate a relationship built upon sharing Midlake’s music to the world. The band continuously worked day and night to create what would become their debut album, an album of incredible vision, talent, dedication and eccentricity: ‘Bamnan and Slivercork’.

Released in June of 2004, ‘Bamnan and Slivercork’ became a instant favorite for many critics and fans worldwide.  After a series of touring stints both domestic and abroad, Midlake rapidly found themselves being embraced by a much larger fan base than ever before. Included in the group was actor and skateboarding legend Jason Lee (My Name is Earl, Mallrats, Almost Famous, etc.).  Jason joined forces with Midlake as a huge supporter, promoter, and collaborator, directing and filming a video for their single, ‘Balloon Maker’.  In June of last year, Midlake appeared with Jason on ‘The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson’ where they were received with an
overflow of wonderful reviews.

Midlake then retreated home to begin work on their next musical venture. With a desire to reach further within and accomplish something even more unique and of their own, Midlake’s determined efforts produced ‘The Trials of Van Occupanther’.  Tim Smith, Singer/Songwriter for Midlake says, “Compared to Bamnan and Slivercork, this album uses less keyboards in favor of acoustic guitar, piano, more vocals and electric guitar. The sound is something more related to 70’s folk rock but not in a gimmicky way, hopefully. I have a great affinity for those bands from the 70’s, the music just seems to move me more. So when writing this album of course those sounds came out in the music.”

With the album available worldwide, and critics touting them as a "Band to Watch", Midlake is set to further the momentum rapidly growing with an album that is sure to merit such high expectations.

PICK OF THE WEEK: The Aliens - Friday, September 28th - The Larimer Lounge, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: The Aliens are the new project of ex-Beta Band members John Maclean, Robin Jones and most notably Gordon Anderson. Anderson, a founder of The Beta Band, has battled with mental illness for the last 10 years and been in and out of institutions. Apparently, he has pulled things together and harnessed his creative potential once again with astounding results.

Their website eloquently introduces the band by saying: "Armed with a bottomless bag of psychedelically inclined rock and acid dipped electronics, The Aliens bring a freedom of spirit and a certainty of intent that immediately sets them out from the current crop of guitar slingers."

They were enthusiastically received at Glastonbury this past summer and have been touring extensively since their debut album Astronomy for Dogs was released back in March. The album, an trippy excursion into a land full of sunny pop epics, will be sure to satisfy the cravings of any Beta Band fan while delighting new fans as well.

The Beta Band may be no longer, but The Aliens are landing in Denver this Friday and they've chosen the tight confines of The Larimer Lounge to unleash their madness on the Mile High City.

PICK OF THE WEEK: They Might Be Giants - Thursday, September 20th - The Boulder Theater, Boulder, CO

Why You Should Go: They Might Be Giants are quite simply one of the most unique and consistently entertaining bands playing today. They have been going strong for more than 20 years and though they shot to popularity in the early 90's with the success of their album Flood, their recent album The Else contains all of the spark and genius that they showcased for the first time all those years ago.

In the live setting, "The John's" (Flansburg and Linnell) play the role of stand-up comics and story tellers almost as well as they play their instruments. They'll keep you in stitches for the whole show while they keep your feet moving with their incredibly witting brand of darkly humorous songs about "Your Racist Friend," "The Shadow Government," "James K. Polk," or perhaps the "Bee of The Bird of the Moth."

They've been around for years and while I'm quite sure they're still going strong, their shows in Colorado are few and far between. So if you're even a little intrigued by The Giants or Geek Rock in general, do your self a favor pony up for the show.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Monolith Festival - Friday & Saturday, September 14th & 15th - Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO

Why You Should Go: Quite simply, why would you not go? A two day festival at arguably the greatest venue in the world is something not to miss, especially if you are lucky enough to live here in Colorado and you have the venue in your backyard.

If that's not enough, the line-up should be enough to entice you. Both headliners, CAKE and The Flaming Lips have headlined Red Rocks on their own and as anchors to this festival they should bring the house down. While Red Rocks show are notoriously expensive, Monolith has tried to keep the ticket price relatively low and for more than 25 bands each day I think they have accomplished it nicely.

In addition to the famed Main Stage at Red Rocks the organizers of Monolith have plotted out an additional 4 stage locations to include two indoor stages in the visitors center at the top of Red Rocks. With stage capacities ranging from 9,000 to probably 500 it will be a great opportunity to see some outstanding emerging artists on small stages while still catching the international headliners on the main stage.

Other bands on the bill include: The Decemberists, Spoon, Kings of Leon, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Art Brut, Editors, Yacht, Flostradamus and many many more.

We are fortunate to have a festival of this caliber happening right here on the front range, please get out and support Monolith so we can be assured that it will become an annual festival as the organizers have planned.

PICK OF THE WEEK: VHS or BETA - Friday September 7th - Larimer Lounge, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: A fiery mix of dance-punk and rock-n-roll give VHS or BETA a leg up on most of today's bands that are capitalizing on the resurgance of the New Wave sound. Their 2004 single "Night on Fire" (below) catipulted them into the mainstream and their recent album Bring on the Comets was released last week and has been referred to as "The Killers meets the Cure meets late-night top-40 radio dance remixes." And to be honest that's fairly accurate.

I wouldn't expect to leave the show unalterably changed, but I would expect to be sweaty and tired from moving to the undeniably danceable tunes that band is sure to crank out in the wonderfully cramped and dingy confines of the Larimer.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Wilco - Saturday and Sunday, September 1 & 2, The Fillmore, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Wilco has always been a band that shines in the live setting. Their last visit to Colorado was under the stars at Red Rocks more than two years ago and this time they bring their captivating live show to The Fillmore for two nights that are sure to be packed.

With their latest release Sky Blue Sky, Wilco has reigned things in a bit for a more stripped down folky sort of sound. The resulting songs that make up the album are very accessible and Jeff Tweedy's reedy voice is in fine form as is the rest of the band.

As the band that stands atop the hoardes of Alt-Country groups in the US today, Wilco is living up to the difficult task of delivering in spades on every offering they release. There is a lot expected of this band and Tweedy and company have gelled into a unit that is capable of producing some of the most beautiful music out there today.

PICK OF THE WEEK: David Wilcox - Saturday, August 25th - Chautauqua Auditorium, Boulder, CO

Why You Should Go: David Wilcox is an anomoly in the music world. His unique grasp of communication shines through in both his songwriting and his performance style. Almost exclusively a Solo performer these days, Wilcox effortlessly commands the attention of every eye in the room with his captivating storytelling approach to his craft.

He rose to prominence in this area when KBCO latched onto "Eye of The Hurricane" that is featured on his 1989 album How Did You Find Me Here. A signature tune of sorts, Hurricane showcases his poingant lyrics and masterful guitar work. Since that break through album, Wilcox has recorded and released 11 outstanding albums. Most recently Vista that was released in 2006 on Boulder's own What Are Records? label.

The rustic vibe of The Chautauqua Auditorium is a perfect setting to witness a David Wilcox performance. As summer winds to a close, I can think of few better ways to spend a Saturday evening than by listening to David Wilcox as the cool evening breeze flows through the old barn at Chautauqua.

See my review of his December show at The Gothic here.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Rocky Mountain Folks Festival - Friday, Saturday & Sunday, August 17-19 - Planet Bluegrass Ranch, Lyons, CO

Note: This Post is my 100th on this Blog since I started it August 11th of 2006. Thanks for all your support over the past year.

Why You Should Go: This is one of the most laid back and well run festivals that I have ever been to. Set in the beautiful town of Lyons, Colo., this festival is the perfect compliment to a summer afternoon. Along the St. Vrain River, Planet Bluegrass Ranch is an oasis nestled among the majestic red rock formations that dominate the Lyons landscape. The Festival, now in its 18th year, brings together some of the most recognized names in the folk world with some bright new up-and-comers.

The folk genre is broad and the organizers are more than willing to push the boundaries of the genre when booking acts. Rest assured that there will be a healthy dose of old favorites, but if you are a music lover who can’t wait to find a new act to sink your teeth into, you won’t be disappointed.

Like Planet Bluegrass’s marquee festival in Telluride, the on-site camping may be close quarters but it fosters new friendships, jam sessions and more than a few good laughs. For those who shy away from big crowds, the relatively low capacity of the Ranch allows this to be one of the most intimate feeling festivals around.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Jason Isbell & Centro-Matic - Thursday, August 9th - The Larimer Lounge, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Centro-Matic frontman and founder Will Johnson and Jason Isbell seem to be cut from the same cloth. Both men are essentially singer-songwriters who put their own fuzzed out, rock-n-roll twist on music that is rooted in the american tradition.

Centro-Matic hails from Austin, TX and Johnson has been cranking out records for years in several different bands, each of which fits a different musical personality that he struggles to give time to shine. Centro-Matic is the strongest of these bands and though they aren't out of the small clubs yet in most of the country, they were given an early spot on the mainstage at the Austin City Limits Festival last September and got a great turnout.

Their music is rough and tender with a bar-room feel that is accesible while still unique in its sound. First timers will get sucked in by the groups easy going attitude, simple yet effective guitar hooks and heartfelt vocals. With a new EP, Operation Motorcide, and at least 7 full length CDs under their belt, it is hard to know what songs Johnson and company might pull out on tour.

Jason Isbell recently parted ways with rising Southern Rockers, Drive By Truckers, to venture out on his own and pursue a solo career. His recent solo record Sirens Of The Ditch has been very well received and he has put together a new band "The 400 Unit" to tour with him in support of the release.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Ryan Adams & The Cardinals - Thursday & Friday, August 2nd & 3rd - Fox Theatre and Red Rocks, CO

Why You Should Go: At its best Ryan Adams' music is simply beautiful and mesmerizing. At its worst his loose alt country ditties that are entertaining and would land most artists a record deal of some kind. Some would argue that his prolific output comprimises the quality of his records but he stands by his work and claims it deserves attention, and I agree with him. However, I do think that had he culled one album from the 3 he released in 2005 he would have easily had one of the best records of the decade so far.

The music of Adams and The Cardinals invokes images of the Grateful Dead, Neil Young, and Wilco when they on their game. They are currently touring in support of their recent outstanding release "Easy Tiger" and so far this summer most shows have highlighted the songs from the new album while also showcasing a few standout tracks from older releases especially 2005's Jacksonville City Nights and Cold Roses.

In the past several years Adams has had some well publicized problems with drugs and alcohol that have negatively effected his shows. In the last year or so he has reportedly cleaned up and by most accounts the shows on this tour have been stellar with Adams in fine voice and form.

Adams shows this summer have either been identified as "Red Cave" or "Blue Cave" performances. As cryptic as this may sound "Red Cave" simply means electric shows and "Blue Cave" means acoustic performances. Adams website identifies the Red Rocks show as a "Red Cave" show so fans can expect a full electric set from the band while The Fox Theatre show will be a 50 minute acoustic "Blue Cave" set. Either way Adams is sure to delight fans new and old.

Below is a clip of "Two" from a "Blue Cave" performance on Letterman recently.

PICK OF THE WEEK: moe. & Leftover Salmon - Saturday, July 28th - Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO

Why You Should Go: It is a great opportunity to catch two titans of the Jamband world on the same bill at the best outdoor amphitheatre in the world. Leftover Salmon is back on top of the Jamgrass world after taking a break for a couple of years and their Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass is bound to be as energetic as ever. Frontman Vince Herman's onstage antics are always entertaining and this reuinted line-up features some of the best bluegrass pickers playing today in the persons of Noam Pikelny (Banjo) and Drew Emitt (Mandolin).

moe. will close the show with a set that is bound to delve deep into their 17 year career. The front page of their website reads: Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan and Gram Parsons...from hard rock to melodic country, moe can write songs and they can play the bejesus out of them live. They can deliver live energy to a studio recording and are equally comfortable playing textural musical landscapes or balls to the wall guitar solos. By not limiting their songwriting to preconceived genres, moe. are a rarity in today's pop music culture. See them live, Buy their album, or live an unfulfilled life.

So whether you want to get down to the zany Bluegrass of Leftover Salmon at Sunset or you're hoping for some epic jams from Buffalo New York's moe. Red Rocks is the place to be on Saturday night.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Tokyo Police Club - Saturday, July 21st - The Larimer Lounge, Denver, CO

NOTE: It is a particularly good week for the Devner music scene this week, while I will highlight one show as usual please take the time to dig up some info on the following shows:

  • Monday: Page McConnell (of Phish) @ The Fox Theatre in Boulder
  • Wednesday: Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey w/ The Sputter @ Cervantes in Denver
  • Thursday & Friday: Bob Dylan w/ My Morning Jacket @ Red Rocks in Morrison
  • Friday: Built to Spill @ The Ogden Theatre in Denver
  • Saturday: Leo Kottke @ Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder
  • Sunday: The Polyphonic Spree @ The Gothic Theatre in Denver

Why You Should Go: With one EP and scarcely 16 minutes of music released in their brief 18-month lifespan, Tokyo Police club have become a sensation of sorts. They have played Coachella, traveled across the Pacific to play a gig in their namesake city in Japan, and more recently the band took the stage at the legendary Glastonbury Festival in England.

Their sound is reminiscient of their Canadian brethren Wolf Parade they weave Flaming Lips like moments and lyrics into their music effortlessly. All quite an set of accomplishments for a group of guys in their early 20's.

In addition to playing at several major festivals Tokyo Police Club recently toured with The Cold War Kids and drew rave reviews for their energetic (though brief) live performances. In a standout moment on that tour one evening when TPC drummer Greg Alsop fell sick, all eight members of The Cold War Kids and tour mates Delta Spirit joined the remaining members of the band on stage for an acoustic jam session that wowed the crowd. Clips of the mayhem are available on YouTube but the sound quality is just too poor to include here.

Before they return to the studio to record their first proper full length later this year Tokyo Police Club is touring small clubs extensively. Don't miss the opportunity to catch the raw energy of this band before they polish it up and end up on the theatre circuit.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Mark Farina - Saturday, July 7th - Twist and Shout, Denver, CO & The Fox Theatre, Boulder, CO

Why You Should Go: Because Mark Farina mixes the finest in downtempo groove and jazzy flavored hip-hop. His genre bending ways have led to the creation of of a new genre known as Mushroom Jazz. The Mushroom Jazz sound evolved when Mark found himself being assigned to the "B" room at a club in Chicago instead of the main room. "As opposed to competing with the house music being played in the other room I decided to play more mellow stuff that you couldn't really play in the house room."

Around the same time, music like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Soul2Soul, and labels like Acid Jazz and Talking Loud were just starting to release their music, and Mark found more and more inspiration for this new sound he was DJing.

"After a while playing in this other room I began to make a tape series and I called it Mushroom Jazz. The Acid Jazz term seemed a little too abrasive and I wanted something a little more organic for the sound I was trying to develop." The tapes evolved into a series of releases that is now 5 volumes strong.

Farina's most recent release House of Om has been hailed by fans and critics alike. In their recent review of House of Om DJ Times said "Every once in a while, an entire genre of music can be defined by the tastes and technique of the selector who somehow understands it better than anyone else. Such is the sort of success that San Francisco - based DJ/producer Mark Farina has achieved for himself since starting off as a record collector and dedicated beatfreak in the house mecca of Chicago."

So whether you are a fan of his House mixes or his Mushroom Jazz a party where Farina is spinning is always a good excuse for a night out. For those of you who can't brave the full on party at The Fox, check out Farina spinning the afternoon away at Twist and Shout in Denver on Saturday afternoon (4-6).

PICK OF THE WEEK: Stephen Stills - Thursday, June 28th - Boulder Theater, Boulder, CO

Why You Should Go: Stephen Stills has been performing Rock and Roll for more than 40 years. He was a a critical factor in the folk revolution of the 60's as a part of Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. He has penned such legendary songs as "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," "Love the One You're With," and "For What It's Worth" in addition to countless others over the years.

While Stills voice isn't what it was 20 years ago, his recent album Man Alive! exceeded expectations and proved that Stills is still a vital and contributing member to the genre that he helped to define.

It isn't often that a performer of Stills stature performs in a venue as intimate as The Boulder Theatre. Though the show is currently sold out, there are some tickets floating around on Craigslist (link below).

Take a look at his performance of "For What It's Worth" from Reading, PA in April of this year.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Feist - Friday, June 22nd - Boulder Theater, Boulder CO

Why You Should Go: French Canadian songstress Feist has been making music for more than 15 years and has quite a eclectic history. She started out as part of pre-grunge/punk band, Placebo whose first gig was a festival slot alongside the Ramones. At age 20 she moved to Toronto and joined the fist-raising sing-along rock band By Divine Right as rhythm guitarist. Her first solo album, 1999's Monarch , heralded Let It Die's stripped down, multi-genre soundscapes. Later she appeared on stage at Peaches' shows as Bitch Lap-Lap, an incompetent rapper wearing Cuban aerobics outfits, sporting a sock puppet. Putting Lap Lap to rest (in a hammock somewhere), she toured through Europe for 2 years with Chilly Gonzales and is a founding member of the Canadian Indie-Pop collective Broken Social Scene.

Today she focusing largely on the kind of stripped down vocally focused songs that dominate her latest release The Reminder. Feist has been appearing on just about every late night talk show over the past couple of months and with a quick search of You Tube you can stumble across clips like the one below of her performing on a Santa Monica city bus for the Jimmy Kimmel show.

While her show at the Boulder Theatre almost certainly will not involve any busses, this humble Chanteuse will be sure to delight the audience with her speical brand of folk.

Be sure to arrive early to check out the indie rock upstarts Grizzly Bear who will open the show.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Soul Stew Revival - Saturday June 9th - The Paramount Theatre, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Just 27 years old, Derek Trucks has forged a name for himself over the years as an innovative guitar virtuoso, recently featured on the cover of Rolling Stone for their "New Guitar Gods" issue. In 2006 Trucks was asked to join guitar legend Eric Clapton's world tour as a featured soloist in his band, a tour extending into the Spring of 2007 and supported by rave critical reviews. On the road over 300 days per year, Trucks currently divides his time between The Derek Trucks Band, The Allman Brothers Band, and his new gig sharing the stage with Clapton.

In the years since Susan Tedeschi captured the public's musical imagination with her 1998 breakthrough album Just Won't Burn, the multi-talented musician has established a formidable reputation as a deeply expressive singer, a prodigiously talented guitarist and distinctive songwriter. A four-time Grammy Nominee, Tedeschi won a large and loyal audience for her ability to craft elements of classic blues, rock, R&B, folk and gospel into a distinctly individual style that honors rootsy musical traditions without being subservient to them.

Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi have combined forces for a summer outing, touring together for the first time as one musical group: Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Soul Stew Revival. The guitar-slinging couple - married since 2001 - have recorded on each other's albums and toured together with their respective bands on occasion, but this will mark the first tour with the two side by side leading one amazing ensemble.

Fans can expect a mixture of material from both artists' repertoire along with a batch of songs worked up especially for this tour, steeped in blues, roadhouse rock and American roots.

The Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Soul Stew Revival consists of acclaimed slide guitarist Derek Trucks, soulful vocalist/guitarist Susan Tedeschi, saxophonist Ron Holloway from Susan's touring outfit and current members of The Derek Trucks Band, Todd Smallie (bass), Yonrico Scott (drums), Kofi Burbridge (keys & flute) Mike Mattison (vocals), Count M'Butu (percussion). The Soul Stew will also debut Derek's younger brother, 18 year old Duane Trucks on second drum kit. Duane graduates high school this year and will continue his "education" with older brother and sister-in-law on the road. Both Tedeschi and Trucks are known for their amazing live performances and along with the impressive individual talents of this band, it promises to deliver a high energy night filled with new and familiar grooves.

The evenings opener, Scrapomatic, features Mike Mattison, the lead vocalist of the Derek Trucks Band and his partner in crime Paul Olsen on guitar. They deliver a stunning mixture of potent blues, foot stomping jazz and sweet soul.

PICK OF THE WEEK: The New Mastersounds - Thursday, Friday & Saturday, May 31, June 1 & 2, Various Front Range Venues, CO

Why You Should Go: The New Mastersounds are a world-class, world renowned, instrumental funk band with 7 years of live performing, 5 full-length album releases and 21 seven-inch single releases under their belt. The line-up: Eddie Roberts (guitar & tambourine), Pete Shand (bass), Simon Allen (drums), Joe Tatton (Hammond & Rhodes) and Rob Lavers (sax & flute).

All five of them met in Leeds, UK, and, as a BBC reviewer says, "NMS may cause some confusion: how can a collection of (mostly) pasty-faced Northerners produce with such authority the dusty funk grooves of the early 70s? It doesn't matter - they just do."

Though the NMS sound is very much their own, there are strong influences from the late-sixties soul-jazz of artists such as Jimmy McGriff, Lonnie Smith and Grant Green, as well as New Orleans funk pioneers the Meters. As a band, and as individuals, they have since clocked up collaborations with an impressive array of musicians DJs and producers, including: Lou Donaldson (Blue Note), Corinne Bailey Rae (EMI), Carleen Anderson (Young Disciples / Brand New Heavies), Keb Darge & Kenny Dope (Kay Dee Records), Andy Smith (Portishead), James Taylor (JTQ), LSK (Faithless), and Karl Denson (Lenny Kravitz / Greyboy AllStars).

The New Mastersounds are at the very top of an elite selection of acts that bring the true soul out of funk.

PICK OF THE WEEK: The Hold Steady - Tuesday May 22nd - The Ogden Theatere, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Because these guys are one of the best bar bands this side of the E Street Band and Craig Finn's vocals are reminiscent of The Boss while maintaining his own gruff identity. Their incendiary live shows draw rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic and they had the distinct honor of being the the first rock group to grace the Village Voice's front page in 15 years in May of 2005.

The Hold Steady's recent release Boys and Girls in America is the prolific bands 3rd release since 2004 and the title really captures what Finn's lyrics are about. His character driven songs bring to life teenage coke addicts, young lust, and summertime beer bashes. A bar room poet of sorts Craig Finn has rapidly gained a following and deservedly so. Songs like "Your Little Hoodrat Friend," "Massive Nights" and "The Party Pit" will take you back whether you're 17 or 33.

This isn't a show to bring your mother to, pack the cooler full of PBRs, call your best buddies and get ready for a night of old fashioned rock-n-roll.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Soleside - Thursday, Friday & Saturday - May 17, 18, 19, Various Front Range Venues, CO

Why You Should Go: Soleside is the most recent side project / collaboration that String Cheese Incident Keyboard player Kyle Hollingsworth is participating in. Of all Hollingsworth's side projects this one seems to have the most potential for groundbreaking musical exploration as he has teamed up with Hip-Hop pioneer Speech (Arrested Development) and turntablist extraordinaire DJ Logic. The three will be backed by guitarist Ryan Jalbert from the Motet and a rhythm section made up of Motet bassist Garrett Sayers and Denver area drummer Damien Hines. Together Soleside will smash jazz/funk, hip-hop and turntables into an explosive new style that defies categorization. "We will rock the funk out," said Hollingsworth about the project.

As the end of String Cheese Incident nears it is exciting to see the members pursuing their own musical futures and even more exciting that we on the Front Range get to see the projects in their infant stages. Hollingsworth has consistently pushed the sound of String Cheese and will certainly survive musically once that band has run it's course. Whether it will be with Soleside or another yet to be conceived of project remains to be seen but the one thing that is for sure is that this line-up will be a treat to see in the intimate confines of these three venues.

Randy Ray of Jambands.com recently conducted an interview with Kyle Hollingsworth and they discussed the origins of Soleside and touched on the end of The String Cheese Incident. To read it click here.

PICK OF THE WEEK: RJD2 - Wednesday, May 9th & Thursday, May 10th - Boulder & Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: RJD2 has steadily worked his way up the ranks of hip-hop credibility since the release of 2002’s Dead Ringer LP. The 30-year-old Philadelphia resident and multi-instrumentalist RJD2 has since released two records, 2004’s Since We Last Spoke and more recently the decidedly more poppy The Third Hand.

For The Third Hand RJD2 seemingly abandons all the notions and titles that have been placed upon him over the past six years. Underground hip-hop super-producer to many, virtuoso sample-based instrumental wizard to some, RJD2 embodies all of these things on “The Third Hand” but placates none who seek more of the same. Recorded, performed, arranged, and produced entirely himself in his basement studio, RJD2 commands his trusty MPC 2000XL sampler/sequencer alongside a pantheon of analog synths, electric pianos and guitars, not to mention his own voice. Most notably, live instruments come in to play – RJ adds another dimension to his music, no longer satisfied with recording directly off of a sampler.

Currently RJD2 is on the road with a full band to reproduce the sounds that he performed on the record. It will be a departure from past RJD2 shows but it is guaranteed to please even the most hardcore fan out there. "This album is a continuation of what I was doing before. The music is still the same. I’m just using different tools," he said in a recent interview. Fans should be excited that he was also quoted as saying: "Music is more exciting than it’s ever been to me. I’ve learned more about music, in a general sense, in the last two years than I have in a long, long time."

PICK OF THE WEEK: Miguel Migs - Friday, May 4th - The Shelter, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Currently Miguel Migs is touring in support of his recently released album Those Things that he put out in March on his own Salted Music label. The album which he says is "electronic music inspired by old soul, funk, reggae and hip-hop," has a very deep, organic sound that throbs with sensuality and is sure to churn the dance floor into a sweaty cauldron of bodies.

When he comes to Denver, Migs will be bringing with him a live vocalist. A longtime collaborator with Migs and talent in her own right, Lisa Shaw features prominently on the album adding vocals to 3 of the records 13 tracks. "The gigs will be mostly DJ oriented but I am brining Lisa along to add a live element to the event that satisfies the audiences' desire to see some sort of performance," Migs said.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Martin Sexton - Thursday, April 26th - The Boulder Theater, Boulder, CO

Why You Should Go: Hailing from Syracuse New York, Martin Sexton got his start busking in the T stations of Boston. His soulful songs are playful and moving and his energy and stage presence are unequaled. While Sexton often performs solo or with only a drummer accompanying him, this time out, word is, he is travelling with a full backing band. It is a chance for fans to see Sexton in a way they may never have before and it is a great opportunity to be introduced to a true musical innovator.

Sexton's new CD Seeds was recorded in a cabin in Maine during the fall of 2006 and as is often the case Sexton played all instruments and sang all of the vocal parts. That gospel choir you hear is in fact Sexton himself pushing the limits of this falsetto.

Sexton's unique vocal ability are complimented by his unique guitar talents. He utilizes effects and looping pedals to create a sound that layered and complicated while staying true to his acoustic roots. He is a master performer and rarely dissapoints.

PICK OF THE WEEK: The Decemberists – Sunday April 22nd – The Fillmore Auditorium, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: The Decemberists most recent album The Crane Wife was, in my opinion, one of the best albums released last year. Their musicianship is top notch and frontman and lyricist Colin Meloy’s songwriting continues to push the boundaries of the genre. His intricate phrasing and enormous vocabulary at once challenges and delights the most discerning of listeners.

While their live shows are usually among the best in the business, involving audience participation, grand sets, and heartfelt performances, I do acknowledge that their last show in Denver was lacking something. To set the record straight Meloy was very sick and while they should have cancelled the show, they tried to play to the capacity crowd and unfortunately let us all down a bit. They promised they would make it up to us next time in town. So far they seem to be following through on that promise as the ticket price ($15) is significantly lower than any other public stop on the tour (college campuses not included). At $15 even a mediocre Decemberists concert is a bargain.

If you ventured out to The Fillmore in November and were disappointed I suggest you give these guys another shot, if they are on their game, you will not be disappointed.

PICK OF THE WEEK: The Greyboy Allstars & Medeski Martin and Wood w/ Cut Chemist - Friday & Saturday, April 13th & 14th - The Fillmore, Denver CO

Why You Should Go: The Greyboy Allstars are back in full effect. After limited "reunion" style shows over the past year or so, The Quintet decided to return to the studio to record a brand new album of Greyboy Allstars material. The result, produced by the bands namesake DJ Greyboy, is What Happened to Television? a tight collection of songs penned by the group in the studio during the recording process.

The band made the decision to bring DJ Greyboy back into the mix for the first time as a producer since their 1995 breakthrough, West Coast Boogaloo, to keep them in check. “We worked with Grey [DJ Greyboy] again on this record because we really wanted to stick to the root of what the Allstars music is about," said Robert Walter in a recent interview with me. "It’s supposed to be danceable and have space in it and not be overly musical. We are all fairly accomplished musicians with an affinity for jazz, and if left to our own devices it is tempting to play a lot of notes and put a lot of fancy stuff in there and Grey really keeps us rooted.”

Joining The Allstars on the bill are Jazz gurus Medeski Martin and Wood and turntablist extraordinaire, Cut Chemist.

Medeski Martin & Wood's live performances are renowned for their exploratory nature. Their concerts usually involve extended improvisations, which may be both arrhythmic and atonal, an aspect of their musicianship that is rarely documented in the studio.

Cut Chemist comes from another world entirely. He is a former member of the Latin funk band Ozomatli, and of the underground hip-hop group Jurassic 5. He is a legend in his own right and with any luck, we'll get to see him collaborate with The Allstars this weekend.

PICK OF THE WEEK: John Scofield - Friday, April 6th - Macky Auditorium, Boulder, CO

Why You Should Go: John Scofield is widely considered to be one of the "big three" of jazz guitarists (along with Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell) and if you catch him live just once you will understand why. His genre bending "Jazz" performances meld blues, funk, R&B and Bebop styles to create a unique sound that fans across the world are familiar with.

Scofield is just as comfortable rocking the intimate confines of the Fox Theatre or a huge stage at a jamband festival, as he is on stage at famous jazz clubs such as The Blue Note in New York or Yoshi's in San Francisco. His recent releases include a collaboration with jam-jazz giants Medeski Martin and Wood (Out Louder), a collection of his interpretations of Ray Charles' catalogue (That's What I Say - John Scofield Plays the Music of Ray Charles) and a John Scofield Trio live release (EnRoute) recorded at The Blue Note in New York City.

Scofield has collaborated with artists such as Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Joe Lovano, and Bill Frisell. Long time collaborators bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bill Stewart will join him on stage at Macky.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Cracker - Thursday & Friday, March 29th & 30th - The Soiled Dove Underground, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: David Lowery and Cracker have been rocking everything from mainstream radio to college burnouts for more than 15 years. Their brand of fuzzed out Alt-Country has paved the way for countless other bands to take their stab at fame.

According to Wikipedia (so take this with a grain of salt), Cracker claims that they are the only band ever to open for both The Ramones and The Grateful Dead. Take that for whatever it is worth, but it definately gives creedance to the ecclectic nature of their music.

The Soiled Dove should be a great venue to catch these veteran rockers doing their thing. After playing rooms like The Gothic and The Bluebird for years, Lowery and company have decided to play smaller venues in town in recent years. A year and a half ago they jammed themselves onto the tiny stage of The Lions Lair and this time it is the more roomy and much less seedy Soiled Dove.

Make your plans soon, the tickets are going fast!

PICK OF THE WEEK: TV On The Radio - Tuedsay, March 20 - The Ogden Theatre, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: TV On The Radio's recent album Return to Cookie Mountain has vaulted them into the upper echelons of today's Indie Rockers. Their layered sound, at times industrial and at times soothingly soulful, takes a little bit of getting used to but will slowly work its way into your regular rotation.

They have been criss crossing the country since the album came out and their live show has drawn rave reviews. They have played the Fox and even Red Rocks as the openers for Nine Inch Nails last summer. This time around they stop into the The Ogden and while it may not be the best room in town for a show, it will be an intimate setting in which to catch this band from Brooklyn before they graduate to venues like The Fillmore.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Bo Diddley - Friday, March 2nd - The Soiled Dove Underground, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Because Bo Diddley is a legend and at 78 years old he is still going strong. He is the man who redefined the electric blues when he burst onto the scene in the mid 50's and helped blues music transition into Rock-n-Roll. He has led a storied career and was even banned from the Ed Sullivan show after only one appearance.

You may recognize Diddley's signature hat or rectangular "Cigar Box" style guitar that he has been playing for most of his career but you are sure to recognize some of his more famous tunes. "Hey Bo Diddley" and "Who Do You Love" have stood the test of time and been covered by countless artists over the years.

Diddley is an aging master and the intimate confines of The Soiled Dove Underground is the perfect place to expose yourself to a musical history lesson of sorts as Diddley is sure to rock his way through some classics on Friday night.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Assembly of Dust & Honkytonk Homeslice - Thursday, Friday & Saturday, February 22nd, 23rd, & 24th - Various Front Range Venues, CO

Why You Should Go: This is a great opportunity to catch two songwriters that are revered in the Jamband scene (Billy Nershi and Reid Genauer) on the same night in the same venue. They will even share the stage with their bands for a short set of originals and covers at the end of the evening.

Billy Nershi is a founding member of the electro/bluegrass/funk powerhouse String Cheese Incident. To the dismay of many loyal SCI fans he has recently announced his departure from the band after summer 2007 to pursue his new project Honkytonk Homeslice full time. In addition to Nershi, HTHS features his wife Jillian and ex-Hanuman multi-instrumentalist Scott Law. Their sound is rooted in the bluegrass and americana traditions that are close to Nershi's heart. Stellar flat picking and tight harmonies dominate the originals the group will offer off of their recent self titled record. I even understand that there are some new tunes that will show their faces on this run of shows. HH performs around 2 large diaphragm microphones. This setup gives them a delicate old-timey-with-a-sexy-modern-twist sound, which works best if the audience is quiet (the microphones pick up crowd chatter & project it along with the music).

Reid Genauer became known to many in the music world as one of the founders of East Coast jam songsmiths Strangefolk during the 90's. Genauer left Strangefolk in 2000 to pursue his MBA from Cornell University and upon graduating promptly returned to making music. His current project, The Assembly of Dust, showcases his talents as a songwriter and frontman. AOD's sound is reminiscent of The Band or Workingman's Dead era Greatful Dead. They have been touring the country for the past 4 years and their upcoming release Recollection is already getting airtime on major radio stations.

These 3 front range shows fall at the end of a 8 night tour of the Western US and should feature fully warmed up bands. Honkytonk Homeslice will start off each evening with a 75 minute set followed by Assembly of Dust with a 75 minute set of their own. The collaborative set will be at least 5 songs, although they've been stretching that out the last couple nights so who knows what'll happen in Colorado. They have had a chance to play several dates together already and I'm sure they have gotten to know each other's styles, so the closing set of the evening should be something to witness.

Don't miss the opportunity to catch HTMS and AOD - Alone and Together.

PICK OF THE WEEK: The Shins - Thursday, February 15th - Fillmore Auditorium, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Because this band will change your life . . . or wait . . . come to think of it that might be overstating it just a little bit. The truth is that until their recent release Wincing the Night Away I wasn't much of a fan at all. The new record has converted me, their sound is far less monotonous and has actually become pretty interesting. In short they have produced a collection of songs that live up to their overnight super stardom (courtesy of Zach Braff, Natalie Portman in Garden State) and prove to music fans everywhere that they are up for the challenge of being a big dog in today's pop music world.

They were playing some of these new songs a few months back when I caught part of their set on the big stage of the ACL Festival down in Austin. I was immediately drawn to the music and found myself telling my friends that I enjoyed The Shins set, something I hadn't exactly expected to hear come out of my mouth.

Be sure to get to the venue early because Viva Voce will be tearing things up early in the evening and they are definately worth catching. Their recent album Get Yr Blood Sucked Out, has made many return trips to my cd player over the past several months.

Yes there are 3 bands on the bill, and the show isn't scheduled to start until 8 but mark my words, The Fillmore is notorious for starting bands well before the start time listed on your ticket. If you are interested in seeing The Giranimals you better get there before 8 while I expect that Viva Voce will take the stage shortly after 8.

PICK OF THE WEEK: The Four Horsemen (Lyle Lovett, Joe Ely, John Hiatt & Guy Clark) - Friday, February 9th - Paramount Theatre, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: This is an amazing opportunity to see four living legend songwriters share the same stage as if they were inviting you into their living room. The format of this show is a songwriters circle where each performer will take his turn playing one song for the group before passing the baton on to the person sitting next to him. They may play some of their best known and loved tunes or they might break out a couple of brand new ones. You never know and it changes each night depending on their mood.

Even if you just go to see one of these fellas, you have my word that you will be wowed by everyone on the stage and I'd be surprised if you didn't pick up a new album or two due to the experience. The old world beauty of the Paramount will suit this evening perfectly as performers and audience alike will soak up the ambiance as it does it's part to make the music sound that much better.

As I mention below the show is currently sold-out but it wouldn't hurt to give Ticketmaster a shot or two (link below) as the show gets closer as they often release tickets as the show approaches. Also try your hand outside the venue on the night of the show, you never who might back out and give you the opportunity to enjoy this amazing musical occasion.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Will Hoge - Friday, February 2nd - Trilogy Lounge, Boulder, CO

Why You Should Go: Will Hoge's electrifying live shows could be defined as Countrified Southern Indie Rock but don't let that scare you away. Hoge is not some crooner up there lamenting the loss of his pick-up. He a straight up rock star who is out to convert you to a believer in his raw brand of music.

Hoge has been visiting Colorado more and more often in the past 6 months and is building up a dedicated fan base that ranges from your typical twenty something music fan to the hard drinking, fun loving, overall wearing, hill billy type.

Hoge has been known to cover The Allman Brothers, Elvis Presely, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and even Eric Clapton during his sets but his own songs are catchy sing alongs that you will find yourself humming long before you are out the door of the club.

Aside from the great music, Trilogy is a great restaurant so head over a little early and enjoy some of the tasty organic cooking that will set you back a few bucks but is absolutely worth it. Check out their menu by clicking the link below under "Venue."

PICK OF THE WEEK: moe. - Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, January 24th, 25th, 26th, & 27th - Various Venues, Denver & Boudler, CO

Why You Should Go: Over the past 5 years moe. has rapidly ascended to become one of the elder statesemen of the Jamband scene. Their raging jams, quirky sound and tight harmonies have made them the logical choice for those crushed by the loss of Phish and caught between the String Cheese and Panic camps.

The last time moe. played the Fillmore they sold it out two night in a row and a DVD of the second night resulted from the run. This time around they are playing in larger and larger venues each night. They start with an instore performance at Twist and Shout in Denver on Wednesday night before graduating up to The Fox in Boulder and then back to Denver's Gothic Theatre and fianally wrapping it all up at The Fillmore with Jeff Austin of Yonder Mountain String Band.

All in all, it is sure to be one hell of a run. The boys are fresh from a 7 night Carribean cruise where they played each night to 800 of their most rapid fans. On this 4 night run they aren't likely to repeat any songs so don't be afraid to hit all 4 shows if you can get tickets.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Zero - Thursday, Friday & Saturday, January 18th, 19th & 20th - Cervantes, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Having been together off and on for more than 20 years this group of phenomonal musicians has grown and matured together while keeping a loose band of musicians together creating the music that moves them and their fans. Grounded in the Bay Area tradition of psychedelic rock, Zero was founded in 1984 by Guitarist Steve Kimock and Drummer Greg Anton. The cast of characters has rotated a bit over the years but as always, the new incarnation retains Anton and Kimock as the core of the band. They are supplemented by Martin Fierro, Liam Hanrahan, Melvin Seals and Donna Jean Godchaux-Makay. On this tour Kimock has even added his son John Morgan Kimock to the roster.

After a 6 year hiatus, Zero reunited last year in Denver and is coming back to our fair city to help Cervates celebrate it's fourth year of existence. It is going to be a party for sure and Zero will be a more than suitable house band for the weekend. There have been special guests hinted at but none confirmed. If you are looking for a jammy, jazzy, or bluesy way to celebrate your weekend, Zero is a sure bet for a good time.

PICK OF THE WEEK: My Morning Jacket - Friday & Saturday, January 12th & 13th - Ogden Theater, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: My Morning Jacket is by all acounts one of the best live bands touring today and their recent live release (CD/DVD) OKONOKOS proves it. Their incindiary blend of Southern Rock and Heavy Rock-N-Roll is captured in all of it's glory on this collection. The catchy guitar hooks, throbbing rhythm section and powerful vocals force the listener to take notice. This 5 piece has all the power you could hope to pack onto one stage.

While they have been around for several years now they are just reaching the top of their game. They have recently shared the stage with The Boston Pops, recorded in Levon Helm's studio and even had Pink Floyd lighting genius Mark Brickman run the board for their DVD filming. ?All together they are a force to be reckoned with on today's rock circuit. PICK OF THE WEEK: The Del McCoury Band - Friday, December 8th - Cervantes, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Because this band is one of the Bluegrass bands touring today. Del and his sons form the core of the Del McCoury band and they are some of the most talented musicians in Bluegrass today. I am not a huge fan of the genre these days but the last time I saw Del McCoury Band at Cervantes I was blown away. The musical talent in the band is second to none and the high lonesome sound lives strong in these boys.

When Del and his band played Cervantes two years ago they took on the jam band vibe of the club head on and inprovised much of a stellar 2 hour set. They even took several requests from the audience. It was clear that night that the band was loving being on stage and they played their hearts out. This legendary band has recently won a Grammy Award and several Bluegrass Music Association honors. They are living legends and the opportunity to catch them in the intimate confines Cervantes should not be missed.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos - Wednesday, November 29th - The Larimer Lounge, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos were the darlings of the 2005 South Park Music Festival here in Colorado. Since then they have signed a record deal with V2 Music and been touring all over the country. Their debut record The Dust of Retreat is a playful blend of Pop and Indie Folk that weaves in just the right amount of grit.

Live, frontman Richard Edwards runs the show with a cast of characters backing him up. The band's unique arrangements employ Rhodes Piano, a healthy dose of Trumpet and even some Cello to soften the mood a bit. The bands energy on the stage hints at their youth but makes for a fantastic performance. My guess you will walk out humming at least one song and you might even have a CD in hand.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Polytoxic (Performing The Last Waltz) - Wednesday, November 22nd - Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Polytoxic has thrown this party twice before and last time The Westword called the concert the best local band concert of the year. Polytoxic may have officially called it quits but they are coming back for one last hurrah with 30 guest musicians in tow.

If you have ever seen and enjoyed Martin Scorsese’s movie documenting the original Last Waltz this evening will not be a let down. Polytoxic performs most, if not all, of the original setlist and may even throw a couple of extra songs in. They have the chops to pull it off and with two previous performances under their belt this is bound to be the best yet.

The 30 guest musicians will include Aaron Rose, who plays the role of Neil Diamond, Jessica Goodkin, sings Van Morrison’s ‘Caravan,’ Christy Chambers playing Joni Mitchell and Cheyenne Kowal from the Reals reprising Emmylou’s role in the movie. The band has also asked the Toxic Horns to join them for evening to round out the sound.

PICK OF THE WEEK: The Decemberists - Tuesday, November 14th - The Paramount Theater, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: The Decemberists live show is one to be witnessed. It is always a very theatrical production with stage props, ornate back drops and audience participation. Colin Meloy is a charismatic frontman who effortlessly leads his band through complex indie-rock compositions that couple his highly intelligent lyrics with elements of Folk and Prog-Rock to create a sound that is unique in rock music today.

With 5 albums and EPs behind them, The Decemberists have recently released one of the best albums of the year. The Crane Wife is their first for Capitol Records and they have managed to retain full creative control despite being signed to a major label. It shows. The album is full of highlights and showcases the maturity of the band both lyrically and musically. They are featuring many of the songs on the album for the first time in the live setting and as they near the end of the tour they are sure to have worked out many of the kinks that come with performing a song live the first few times.

This is a band that it hitting their stride right before our eyes. They may continue to rise or they may have reached their apex, either way with the chance to see them perform at the beautiful Paramount Theater here in Denver is not one to be missed.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Jamie Lidell - Thursday, November 9th - Larimer Lounge, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Because Lidell's recent release Multiply has been getting rave reviews on both sides of the pond. His brand of Blue Eyed Soul is fresh and poppy and even a little reminiscent of Jamiroquai at times. Lidell creates danceable beats and his silky smooth vocals round out the mixes with a flavor that Prince would be proud of. On stage he plays the parts of DJ, producer, and crooner equally well as he assemlbes his set with the aid of electronic looping equipment that allows him to accompany himself when live instruments aren't present. His background in the world of Techno Funk (as half of the duo Super_Collider) will often creep back into the mix when Lidell takes the stage. The tracks that are so tightly orchestrated on the album will occasionally devolve into completely improvised electronic noise storms. He offers a little something for everyone and it is blatantly obvious the man is an artist who is pushing himself everday.

Though the small confines of the Larimer may not allow for much in the way of a visual display, Lidell has become known for outstanding visuals and often tours with a lighting and effects artist (Pablo Fiasco) who adds to the energy and might of each performance. It will be interesting to see what he manages to pull together on the little stage at the Larimer.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Robert Randolph & The Family Band and Gomez - Tuesday, October 31st - Fillmore Auditorium, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: This is an ecclectic line up for Halloween night in Denver. Gomez brings their unique brand of Brit-Pop back to the Fillmore for the first time since 2004 and this time heavyweight jamband outfit Robert Randolph and the Family Band will be on the bill as well. It is a unique combination of bands but should make for a fun evening. Gomez leans towards towards darker chugging rock-n-roll while Robert Randolph will bring the congregation to their feet with Gospel inspired Funk and Soul that was born in the tradition of Sacred Steel. Randolph is widely known as one of the best Pedal Steel Guitar players on the touring circuit today and his passion and energy come through loud and clear in his music.

I am sure there will be a large contingent of costumed concert goers so don't hesitate to come dressed to the nines in your Halloween best, you won't be alone!

PICK OF THE WEEK: The Rhythm Devils - Friday, October 27th - Fat City, Littleton

Why You Should Go: This is a jamband line-up that is rarely equaled outside of late night jam sessions at festivals like The New Orleans Jazz and Hertigae Festival. With Grateful Dead drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kruetzman pounding the skins, Mike Gordon of Phish supplying the bass duties, Steve Kimock of Zero and Phil and Friends fame on the guitar and a rotating cast of vocalists including Jen Durkin of The Bomb Squad and Deep Bananna Blackout the evening promises jams galore.

So far on the tour the band has played several classic Dead tunes including The Other One and Sugaree and has also worked a number of new Robert Hunter penned tunes into the setlists. They have been on the road off and on since mid-August and this point I am sure they are hitting their stride as a band.

Don't expect a full set of Dead tunes as you will be dissapointed but if you go looking for a good time and some outstanding musicianship I don't think you will be let down.

The venue is a indoor amusement park of sorts with Bumper Cars, Mini Golf, Bowling, an arcade and of course a full bar. If you get bored with the tunes or just need a break, there will be lots of other things to do.

The show is billed as "Quixote's Fieldtrip @ Fat City Feat The Rhythm Devils." I believe that the Cervantes / Quixote's crew is running a shuttle to the venue from their Welton Street location. Call the venue to check on availability: 303.297.1772

PICK OF THE WEEK: The Saw Doctors - Tuesday, October 17th - The Bluebird Theater, Denver

Why You Should Go: The Saw Doctors are one of the finest Traditional Irish-Rock bands to play in the U.S. in many years. Celebrating 20 years as a band they have wowed audiences around the world with their distinctly Irish sound. They sent two #1 singles up the Irish charts and recently released their most wistful and introspective album to date, The Cure.

Their live show is always a thrill. Audience participation, sing alongs and plenty of dancing are commonplace at a Saw Doctors show. If you like a good pub on St. Patricks Day, a few too many pints of Guinness, or if you just have a soft spot for the ol' Irish Shamrock I suggest you head out to The Bluebird and show just how much Irish you've got in your soul.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Paul Simon w/ Jerry Douglas - Tuesday, October 10th - Magness Arena, Denver

Why You Should Go: Simply put Paul Simon is a legend. In 2006, Time Magazine called him one of the "100 people who shape our world." With a career that has spanned the nearly half a century and some of the most well known songs in the American popular Folk cannon, Simon has cemented his place in history. From his early days with Art Garfunkel through his most recent release Surprise Simon has often risen well above expectations.

Surprise was indeed a surprise to many longtime fans. A musical partnership with visionary musician and producer Brian Eno helped Simon to reinvent his sound yet again. This time with a much more ambient electronic feel. On songs such as "How Can You Live In The Northeast," "Outrageous" and "Wartime Prayers" Simon take advantage of Eno's musical soundscapes to beautifully frame some of the most well written lyrics since 1988's Graceland.

Having been on the road since late June, Simon and his band have settled into fine form and have had plenty of time to refine a setlist that has included such gems as "Duncan," "Gumboots," "The Boxer," and of course "You Can Call Me Al." It is a concert that promises not to dissapoint.

On hand to warm up the crowd will be Dobro master Jerry Douglas. Douglas is widely regarded as the world's best dobro player and is a staple of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, both with his own band and with Allison Krauss and Union Station. Over the years he has collaborated with such artists as Eric Clapton, Bela Fleck, Ray Charles, James Taylor, and Emmylou Harris to name a few. Do yourself a favor and head in a bit early to catch his set.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Kasabian w/ Mew & onethousand pictures - Saturday, Oct 7th - Gothic Theatre, Denver

Why You Should Go: Four words: Face Melting Psychedelic Rock. That's all there is too it. This Leicester UK quartet exploded onto the British Music Scene 2 years ago with their self-titled debut and with the recent release of their second album Empire, Kasabian has proved they haven't slowed down. Their Stone Roses-esque blend of powerful vocals, driving guitar and huge beats command attention and won't take "no" for an answer. They rocked Red Rocks a year ago opening for Oasis and take my word for it, they'll bring their UK arena show to The Gothic on Saturday. Don't forget your earplugs.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Eric Bachmann & Richard Buckner - Friday, Sept 29th - Walnut Room, Denver

Why You Should Go: First of all the Walnut is a hidden gem in Denver. Located at 31st and Walnut in the warehouse district north of Coors Field, The Walnut is a combination restaurant, bar and venue. The food isn't top notch but it will satisfy late night munchies or the need to grab a quick bite before catching a show. The intimate performance space holds about 250 people and with great sound and an easily accesible bar it is a great space to hear live music.

Second, Eric Bachmann is not to be missed. He has been prolifically producing material since his days with Chapel Hill, NC band The Archers of Loaf in the early 90's. In the last 6 years he has stepped away from the punk influenced noise of the Archers and steered himself in a more folky direction as Crooked Fingers. Crooked Fingers is a loose affiliation of musicians that has evolved more and more into a band over the years. While Eric Bachmann is for all intents and purposes Crooked Fingers he recently decided to release his first album under his given name. The album, To The Races, was released on August 22nd on Saddle Creek Records and is a stellar collection of emotional acoustic songs that will appeal to fans of Crooked Fingers as well as fans of the current Indie-Folk movement.

As an added bonus to this performance Bachmann will be joined by Richard Buckner who just released his 8th album Meadow, and Nick Urata of local world indie favorites Devotchka. With Nick on the bill we can hope that Tom Hagermann (also of Devotcka) who's violin appears on several To The Races tracks, will be on hand to add his violin to the mix throughout the evening.

The intimacy of the venue and the strength of the line-up make this show my pick of the week.
